The Month in Clay - December 2009
‘Tis the season for giving, and what better way to celebrate than by giving your loved ones handmade gifts? I’m sure many of you will be making gifts, but in case you run out of time to make something for everyone on your list (it is almost December! Yikes!), I am posting some highlights of the fabulous holiday ceramics sales that are going on this season. I thought the festive decoration on the jars at left by Emily Free Wilson, which are included in Northern Clay Center’s “‘Tis a Gift” event, were the perfect opener to this post because the decoration reminded me of holiday lights. Hopefully these jars, and the great stuff below will get you fired up for the holidays!  Atlanta, GeorgiaMudFire Gallery (www.mudfire.com) proudly presents its Holiday Studio Sale, featuring work of more than 100 potters and clay artists from Atlanta and the Southeast. The exhibition and sale feature locally-produced, finely-crafted functional and decorative ceramics made by emerging and established clay artists. Starting on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the gallery will be brimming with a humungous selection of unique, handmade, artful pottery (and sculpture) at reasonable prices. Doors to the sale open on Friday, November 27 at noon. A holiday party and artist reception will be held on Saturday, December 5 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. More than 100 local and regional ceramic artists (such as Joey Sheehan, whose work is shown here) participate in this show. Inventory is replenished daily and the show runs through December 21. |

 Allston, MassachusettsCelebrating its 40th anniversary, the Ceramics Program of the Office for the Arts at Harvard will present its annual Holiday Show and Sale December 10 - 13. More than sixty potters and sculptors, affiliated with this dynamic studio program, will present an extraordinary selection of hand-made work ranging from masterpieces to treasured bargains. Long recognized as featuring the best and most varied selection of contemporary ceramics in the Northeast, this popular exhibition attracts several thousand visitors each year. Help commemorate the 40th anniversary by visiting the Studio and meeting the artists who have earned the Program’s international recognition. Free cups made by exhibitors will be available on a first-come, first-served basis during the opening reception, on Thursday, December 10th, 3-8 pm. The Holiday Show and Sale will continue Friday through Sunday, December 11 - 13, 10 am - 7 pm. In the event of snow on Sunday, a snow date is scheduled for Monday, December 14, 10am - 7pm.  St. Paul, Minnesota“Handcrafted Holidays” is going on through December 24 at the Grand Hand Gallery (http://www.thegrandhand.com/). The gallery is overflowing with handmade gifts and ornaments for the holidays - in addition to its regular assortment of local, regional, and national artists’ work. A portion of the sales from this event will be to The Craft Emergency Relief Fund (http://craftemergency.org/), which provides financial support to working artists who have suffered some kind of disaster - floods, studio fires, or personal injuries are the sorts of temporary setbacks that can wipe out an artist’s career. |

 Portland, OregonThis holiday gift giving season, The Gallery at Museum of Contemporary Craft (www.museumofcontemporarycraft.org), in partnership with Pacific Northwest College of Art, presents “Informing Tradition: Functional Ceramics From Seven Oregon Makers.” This retail show in the Museum’s sales gallery features ceramic artists of varied generations and influences. Makers range from the established and influential Wally Schwab, to David Piper (work shown here), who infuses the modern angles of his architecture practice into his ceramic work. Vases, mugs, tea pots, all goods featured in this show, are designed to enhance day-to-day living and, like everything in The Gallery, they are made by hand. Through live artist talks and artist bios hung in the retail space, Informing Tradition gives a personal insight into the deep legacy of craft, and the score of new creative ideas, found in the Pacific Northwest.  Port Chester, New York“CLAY-HOLIDAY: CAC Annual Studio Tour and Sale” will take place December 3-20 at the Clay Art Center (http://www.clayartcenter.org). Clay Art Center artists will have fine functional pottery and ceramic sculpture on display in their studio spaces and throughout the 7000-square-foot facility.
