Before I became the editor of Ceramic Arts Daily, I was associate editor of Ceramics Monthly magazine. The May issue of the magazine was always an issue that I looked forward to because the May issue housed the results of Ceramics Monthly’s annual Emerging Artist contest. The competition is open to ceramic artists who have actively been pursuing a career in ceramics for less than ten years. Each year towards the tail end of winter, the entries would start rolling in the door for the contest. This was exciting, not only because it meant that Spring was right around the corner, but also because it gave us the opportunity to see a large sampling of what was new and exciting in ceramic arts and often exposed us to some new faces we hadn’t previously known.

This year was no different (and the CM staff graciously allowed me to participate in the review of the works and put my two cents in on the winners). After it was all said and done, fifteen artists were chosen and the scope of the work ranged from compelling installation work, to unsettling figurative sculpture, to clean, geometric ceramic tile work, to refined functional pottery. Images from the portfolios of a couple of the winners are pictured here.

We thought it would be fun to get some feedback on the emerging artists from you, the Ceramic Arts Daily community. So we have set up an online ballot form and we invite you to vote for your favorite emerging artist. Click the link below to view the winners and cast your vote. Before voting, we encourage you to click on the images to learn more about each artist. The voting is open until Friday April 25, and we’ll let you know next week who gets the title of “Ceramic Arts Daily People’s Choice Emerging Artist.”
