Through the act of arranging, stacking, balancing, and connecting porous ceramic units, I invite the viewer to experience how a wall or floor might contain space and direct flow through space in new ways.
The eighteenth century German philosopher Immanuel Kant described decoration as “enlivening the object for sensation.” In my work, extruded forms function both as decoration and as structure. Depending on their context, they become floors, window screens and room dividers. This architecture is not merely decorated, it actually grows from decoration.
