Chattering
When your pot clay is hard you can chatter it, which gives it a different surface technique. Different tools create a different “chatter” which tells you the surface of the pot is dry enough for the process to work. Some tools create a sound similar to those made by playing cards clipped onto bicycle wheels with clothes pins in the ’50s when our potters were children.
Saggar: Chloride and Copper Sulfate
See how a saggar (aluminum foil in this case) creates a container around the pot to hold in all the vaporization and gases to keep it up against the pot. Learn where you can purchase ferric chloride to spray on your pot. This corrosive is toxic and must be used in a plastic sprayer (and always read the warnings that come with the materials you use). Witness the result when copper sulfate is added to the saggar container.

Glazes
Raku Crackle is a technique started in the 50s and 60s and it can be fired quickly. Learn some tricks of the trade to create amazing colors. With Copper Matte, learn about the combinations of chemicals to achieve diverse results when fired.

Firing in Randy’s Mobile Kiln
See the unique structure that provides maximum heat for the clay, and how a low-fire glaze on a high fire clay creates a spectacular effect. Observe how a Fast Fire, produces a Raku Crackle and watch colors change right before your eyes in the see-through reduction chamber. Learn why the weight of the pot and the size of the opening in it help determine the amount of time it remains in the reduction chamber.
See first hand how students learn the importance of pacing. Find how why they should not work too quickly. Watch the effects achieved when chemical solutions are concentrated on specific areas. Listen to Randy explain how he achieves subtle variations of color in his creations.
