Stephen begins the DVD by telling his story of when he was at the University of Iowa and he watched Steven Kemenyffy throw a 5-foot tall pot. Really impressed, he wanted to know how that was done, but when the professor came through the studio, he told Kemenyffy to make good small pots. Stephen never forgot the lesson and maintains still that making good small pots is the first step to making good large pots. |
| With Throwing Large Pots, Stephen recommends watching the entire DVD all the way through to get a feel for all the techniques and types of large pots you can make. Stephen demonstrates the first pot, but Bill Gossman, a master potter now living in Minnesota, demonstrates several different techniques, which are clarified with Stephen’s commentary. |

With any technique, practice is important, so you’ll need to set aside some time to try out these different methods. But even with the first technique where you learn to throw an 18-inch cylinder, the whole process is so much easier with just knowing the basic rules for your clay body (course materials, plastic and de-aired), and being able to watch where your hands go in order to get a tall cylinder. |
| Whether you choose one or all of the methods shown in this DVD, you’re sure to find success when you go to make the large pots you’ve always admired but never been able to throw. ‘re looking to make large vases, bowls, bottles or jars, Jepson’s How to Throw Large Pots will certainly help you along the way. | ![]() |
