Precious metal clay (PMC) is an amazing clay product. It consists of finely powdered precious metals, either silver or gold, bound together in a pliable organic binder. There are two types of silver PMC, both 99% pure, and a 24k gold PMC. The clay is nontoxic, and comes in lump form, sheets, paste and a syringe.

If you’ve ever molded clay for jewelry, then you’ll love PMC. Before PMC, the only way to create jewelry from metal was to use either use wire, sheets, solder or the lost wax method. But working with PMC has all the benefits of working with clay in that your imagination is the only limiting factor.

In this remarkable DVD, Hattie Sanderson discusses the basic tools and supplies you need for working with PMC as well as creating textures and manipulating the material. Because PMC is expensive, she advises using polymer clay, which fires in an oven, as a practice material. But you may find that many of the techniques for PMC can also be used to make jewelry with polymer clay and even ceramic clay.

For firing PMC, there are three methods - torch, hot pot and kiln. You can get by with a butane torch and placing the PMC on a piece of refractory. If you wish to include gemstones into your work, then you’ll need a small kiln, like that used in enameling and glass fusing.

After going through all the techniques and information you need to get started, Sanderson leads you through seven projects designed to build your skills and confidence with each successive project.

The first two earring projects are simple and include rolling out a basic shape and adding a sapphire to one pair and curving and adding decorative elements to the second pair.

In the third project “Life Pendant” Sanderson explores a different way to set a stone along with making a fold-over bail and using stamps with letters. Next, in doing the “Temple Pendant” you’ll learn how to make a prototype from polymer clay to control the size of your finished project. A “Molded Mask Pendant” demonstrates how to make models and flexible molds then how to make matching pieces of different sizes.

The final two projects become a little more complex. In “Sticks and Stones” you can use a stick as an armature and brush PMC on the outside to get a very organic look. And the “Pendant Slide” utilizes PMC sheets and paste along with semiprecious stones and a bezel maker.

Hattie Sanderson is an excellent teacher which is evident in her measured pace and thorough presentation. If you know nothing about PMC, this is the DVD to get. Sanderson covers the basics and moves you logically from one aspect of the process to another, explaining every detail along the way.
