No Wheel, No Problem
If you’re looking for a few great, creative techniques offering loads of potential, look no further. Mitch Lyons, a skilled potter for more than 40 years, presents an expertly produced two-part program where he shares some of his unique handbuilding and decorating techniques using a stick and colored clays.

For anyone who thinks working on the wheel is essential in pottery making, Lyons proves otherwise. In the first part of his DVD, Lyons demonstrates making seamless cylinders using a “broomstick” method utilizing a series of dowels and tubes (up to several inches in diameter). The results are cylinders of just about any length and any diameter, all without a seam and evenly constructed. Once formed, Lyons shows how the cylinder is easily altered and finished into a variety of shapes.

Decorating with Fresh Clay

Frustrated by the amount of time between forming a piece and decorating it after a bisque fire, Lyons came up with several finishing techniques he could incorporate into the forming stage. In part two, he demonstrates decorating techniques geared to working with fresh clay. You’ll discover a remarkably elegant inlay design, how to incorporate colored clays into a form, transferring colored slips to a surface, textures and combinations of all the above.

This incredible DVD set goes beyond the basic ‘how-to’ video to document the vast knowledge of an established and highly respected Master Potter and his many years of experience.

In each of the two parts, Lyons demonstrates his techniques while making complete pieces—a vase, a wedding vessel, a pitcher, a plate—all decorated during the forming process with a combination of colored clays, slips and textures. You’ll want to view this DVD over and over again just to absorb the many tips he offers along the way while demonstrating the featured forming and finishing techniques.

Great DVD. It was fantastic and full of useful techniques that I can’t wait to try out. If I knew how much information was in one DVD I would have gladly paid twice the price. I will attempt to use some of the techniques in my work. Thank you again. -Fujie
