All potters know that throwing looks easier than it actually is, so if you’ve ever tried it and gave up, your struggle is over. Stephen Jepson’s Introduction to Throwing is certain to help anyone learn to throw whether you’re totally new to clay or perhaps just struggling due to poor training. In this 90-minute DVD, you’ll learn how to throw plates, platters, saucers, mugs, cups, bowls, cylinders, and pitchers; and how to trim, pull handles, make spouts and more. From the very beginning of how soft your clay should be (as soft as you can get it) to basic wedging (slice and slam), Jepson takes you through a step-by-step process that’s proven successful to hundreds of students and workshop attendees.
Jepson teaches his failsafe method through a series of skill building projects. Beginning with a “doggie dish”, you’ll learn how to center and throw a low flat cylinder that covers the basics of wedging, centering, coning and throwing. In centering and coning, Jepson emphasizes the importance of every step in the process for guaranteed success.

From the low flat dish, Jepson moves you on to throwing a cylinder where you use the techniques of the first exercise and add the claw and knuckle. Since you use different parts of your hand when forming different shapes, Jepson shows how forming a claw with your hand becomes a great throwing tool. For a tall cylinder, your claw raises a cylinder quickly and easily then you use your knuckle complete the form. Using cut-away models, Jepson demonstrates just exactly what’s happening with your hands and the clay. |

Jepson leads you through several projects – mugs, pitchers, bowls and plates – where you’ll learn some of the finer points inherent with each form. With each project, he throws two or three examples showing different possibilities and reinforcing the principles of what he’s teaching. | ![]() |

One of the things Jepson emphasizes in the DVD is that you need to practice, and he recommends beginning each throwing session with a low flat bowl and a tall cylinder just to warm up. You’ll be amazed the speed and ease at which he works, but understand that this is a man who has thrown up to 1,000 pots in a single day! In the end, he maintains that this is just clay, not skydiving or mountain climbing where mistakes are unacceptable. Practice and have a wonderful time! |
