Collaboration: The Ceramic Art of Tom Coleman and Frank Boyden
![]() |
Collaboration in art is an extremely difficult proposition. First of all, there’s the obvious hurdle of personalities that have to mesh before the first work can be done, and then there’s the ongoing collaboration that can possibly grow over the years. While collaboration is not for everyone, finding someone where the chemistry works holds the potential for creating work unlike either individual is capable of. It may be another source filled with rich potential. In this DVD, two acclaimed artists collaborate and set a standard while doing so. Presented by AMOCA, American Museum of Ceramic Art |

Tom Coleman and Frank Boyden became friends in the early 1970’s. In 1983 they began working together to pursue the complex, labor-intensive process of wood-firing ceramic vessels. By 1986 these artists, through mutual respect and admiration, saw the possibility of combining their talents and began collaborating to create single ceramic artworks, with Tom throwing and Frank designing and drawing on the surfaces. After a difficult and costly learning process, their art has gained international attention and is now included in many major collections, both public and private, including the Smithsonian Institution. |

This film documents the challenges, risks and rewards of two extremely talented artists who have collaborated to bring about a significant achievement in ceramic art. Their accomplishments are now preserved in the permanency of the ceramic medium and are their legacy to the generations of the future. When you hear them discuss the challenges and the successes, you gain a better understanding of what it takes to accomplish something as great as they have achieved. The collaboration of Tom Coleman and Frank Boyden is not unusual but it is unique because each collaboration creates a third entity with its own character. It’s something worth exploring. |
